Hack #1: Front-Load Decisions Before School Ends
Make every selection you possibly can before mid-May. Tile, lighting, plumbing fixtures, paint colors, cabinet hardware, appliances. Get them all locked before the kids walk out of school. Once summer hits, your bandwidth for those decisions disappears, and changes mid-summer cost time and money.
Hack #2: Designate a Single ‘Build Day’ Per Week
Pick one weekday — Tuesday morning, say — as the dedicated build day. Site visit, builder meeting, decisions, paperwork, all in that block. The other six days of the week are protected. The single build day means kids know when you’re available and when you’re not.
Hack #3: Rent for the Worst Weeks
If your current home is being remodeled or sold, rent during the messiest construction weeks. Trying to keep kids home during dust, noise, and trades through the house creates a summer no one wants. Six weeks in a rental usually costs less than the family stress saved.
Hack #4: Plan a 2-Week Vacation in the Middle of the Build
The build will continue without you. Pick a two-week window in late June or early July, vacate completely. Builder runs uninterrupted. Family resets. Coming back fresh makes the back half of the build dramatically easier than grinding through it nonstop.
